Racism blog #3
When I hear people make racist comments I get really grossed out and offended. I don’ think there very funny. A common statement aftr I call someone out on their lame joke, is “Oh I’m just kidding, I’m seriously not racist!” But after a few times of hearing this I have trouble believing them. I hate when people in positions of power, for example, a banker will serve a white person first, because they don’t like minorities.
Satire blog #3
I think people had a hard time accepting the book in the late 1800s and early 1900s because it showed them what was wrong with their current way of life. It made them feel uncomfortable to acknowledge that this had been their country a mere 20 years ago. Presently, people want to ban the book because of its being racist or difficult to understand. But in the past it was more of an issue of satire.
Satire blog #2 or 3, I can’t remember
A clear example of satire in Huck Finn in the beginning of the book is when Pap rants about the corrupt government and “niggers.” It shows even a man who nobody respects still has an opinion that he is superior to black people. Even though nobody cares what Pap thinks he still drunkenly voices his opinion. My question is;
How can an idea like racism become a way of American life so easily?
Slave Narrative # 2
After reading some of the slave narratives I had a better understanding of slavery. I think one of the worst aspects of it is being torn apart from your family. Also, women were treated horribly. They were expected to perform sexual favors for their masters. That is disgusting. I really admire people like Frederick Douglas, Harriet Tubman, Sojunor Truth for the courage they had to stick up for their liberty. I can’t even begin to fathom what it would be like to be taken away from my family and be sold to an old perv who expects me to treat him with respect but he treats me like dirt.
Even when a slave gained freedom it still would be really difficult for them to excel in the real world because they are so damaged. It is ingrained in their head that they are worthless. Also they would still have a really hard time being treated equally.
I can’t believe people have the gall to say Huck Finn should be banned because it is “anti-white.” Despicable.
Slave Narrative #1
So my understanding of slavery before reading the slave narratives was simple. I understood blacks were treated atrociously and it was an evil. I have always thought it was a cruel unfathomable piece of history. It has always interested me. I have always had a tough time understanding where white people got the idea that they were the superior race. I always wondered what womens roles were.
Interesting link- race or mistake?
This is an interesting link to a sad story of three men shot repeatedly by NY police and the death of another.

The Tempest
This is very early for my blog post about a seperate Shakespeare we have experienced.
I was Miranda in The Tempest. Shakespeare is more difficult to work on than modern plays. The language is difficult to interpret and portray exactly as it’s supposed to. To put feeling in Shakespeare’s words and perform for a modern audience is very difficult. A lot of the feedback I got was it was difficult to understand what was happening. I don’t think I would have understood if I hadn’t been in it. Also, an interesting difference between Shakespeare and modern playwrights is that modern is easier to memorize. I think it has to do woth familiarity of the words and it usually makes sense in regards to what the person before you is saying.
Adaptation$ of The $cotti$h Play
Hello all.
My favorite adaptation of the Scottish Play that we looked at was the African uMbatha. I enjoyed the African supernatural element. My favorite part was the stage direction of the ”drum heard in the distance.” My least favorite was the travesty. I did not find it funny at all. Pehraps people watching 200 years ago would have found it entertaining but I didn’t. The only I part I thought was interestingly twisted was the ending. Macbeth, Banquo, Lady Macbeth, and Lady MacDuff come back to life. They just emerge out of nowhere. It is as if they just decided to return because everything looks as though it may be good in Scotland now. Also, Macbeth does not try to fight for the crown, he accepts that Malcolm is the new King. In Throne of Blood the plot was almost exactly the same as in the true Scottish Play. However, there was no Macduff. Macduff is an interesting character to leave out of the plot considering he kills Macbeth at the end. In the Japanese version, Macbeth’s troops turn against him and kill him. Perhaps the director wanted to portray that nobody supported Macbeth, not even his own people. Lady Macbeth also goes nuts. the director of Throne of Blood uses a lot of symbolism. For example, the bird on Macbeth’s left shoulder meant bad luck, or Banquo’s flag being a rabbit.
I feel as though only the original Scottish Play is the best. It is the first and original version that is the true story. I’ve never been crazy about adaptations, I feel as though a lot is lost. Nobody can write like Shakespeare and for it to be trasnlated to Japanese, it seems as though a lot would be forgotten.
final night
At the end of this heartfelt tragedy, Elie’s father dies. After reading about him and his father for the duration of the book, I grew to love and feel sympathy for them. One of my main concerns was that Elie and his father make it together. But, Elie’s father didn’t make it. Wiesel wrote in such a manner that the reader really feels sympathetic for the victims and disgusted by the perpetrators. It was very sad, but it also made the memoir seem necessarily real. It was not a fairy tale in which everyone is happy and alive in the end. I enjoyed the book very much and I would reccomend it to anyone. It is short, easy, quick, and also very gripping.
